Sheet metal weight calculator

Home / Sheet metal weight calculator

The calculator works out the weight of a single sheet and of a whole batch from its dimensions, thickness and material density. The result appears as soon as the data is entered, with no need to click.

The result is indicative. The actual weight depends on the steel grade, thickness tolerance and coating. Formula: length × width × thickness × density.

You know the weight. Now check sheet availability and price

HEN-STOL supplies steel sheets without a mill certificate: hot-rolled, cold-rolled and galvanized, in coils, strips and sheets, in second grade (non-prime), as well as overrolled steel and overproduction at attractive prices. Just send the specification: grade, thickness, format and quantity, and we will get back to you within an hour.

How the weight of steel sheet is calculated

The weight of a sheet follows a simple formula: length × width × thickness × material density. The calculator takes the dimensions in millimetres, converts them to metres and multiplies them by the density in kg/m³. For carbon steel, i.e. hot-rolled, cold-rolled and galvanized sheet, a density of 7850 kg/m³ is used. This is the value applied in trade and in transport planning; the zinc coating and differences between grades change the result only negligibly for pricing purposes.

Example: a 1500 × 3000 mm carbon steel sheet, 3 mm thick, is 1.5 m × 3.0 m × 0.003 m × 7850 kg/m³, i.e. 105.98 kg. A bundle of 20 such sheets weighs 2.12 t.

What the sheet metal weight calculator is used for

In a manufacturing plant, sheet weight determines three things: the material price, transport costs and warehouse logistics. Steel sheet is priced per tonne, so a quick conversion of format and number of sheets into kilograms gives an immediate estimate of the order value and makes offers easy to compare. Knowing the batch weight also helps to choose the right means of transport, check the load capacity of racks and cranes, and plan unloading.

The calculator is intended for sheets and cut-to-size blanks. For coils and strips, the weight also depends on the length of the wound strip, so such enquiries are best sent directly to the HEN-STOL sales team, which selects the material and format for the specific production.

Once the sheet weight is known, it is worth checking straight away how many parts the sheet will yield and how much waste will remain. This is what the sheet metal waste calculator is for: it compares sheet formats for a specific part size.

Frequently asked questions about steel sheet weight

How is the weight of steel sheet calculated?

The weight of a sheet is calculated using the formula: length × width × thickness × density. Dimensions in millimetres must be converted to metres, and a density of 7850 kg/m³ is used for carbon steel. A 1500 × 3000 mm sheet, 3 mm thick, weighs 1.5 m × 3.0 m × 0.003 m × 7850 kg/m³, i.e. 105.98 kg.

How much does a 1000 × 2000 mm sheet, 1 mm thick, weigh?

15.7 kg. The same format weighs 31.4 kg at 2 mm and 47.1 kg at 3 mm. Weight increases in proportion to thickness, so the result for one thickness simply needs to be multiplied.

What steel density should be used for calculations?

In trade and transport planning, 7850 kg/m³ is used for carbon steel, i.e. hot-rolled, cold-rolled and galvanized sheet. The differences between grades are small enough not to affect the result significantly for pricing.

Does the zinc coating change the weight of the sheet?

Only slightly. Coatings designated Z100 to Z275 under EN 10346 amount to 100 to 275 g per square metre in total on both sides, which for a 1 mm sheet is roughly 1.3 to 3.5 percent of its weight. For thicker sheets, the share of the coating is even smaller.

How many sheets are there in one tonne?

Divide 1000 kg by the weight of one sheet. A 1250 × 2500 mm sheet, 2 mm thick, weighs 49.06 kg, so one tonne holds 20 sheets. The same format at 1 mm weighs 24.53 kg, i.e. 40 sheets per tonne.

Why does the delivered weight differ from the calculator result?

Sheet is rolled within a thickness tolerance, and sheets cut from coil also have a dimensional tolerance, so the actual weight of a batch may be slightly higher or lower than the theoretical one. The calculator gives the theoretical weight used for pricing and transport planning, while settlement is based on the actual weight.

Can the calculator be used for stainless steel or aluminium?

The calculator is designed for carbon steel, which is the HEN-STOL product range. For other materials, their density simply needs to be substituted into the formula, for example about 8000 kg/m³ for austenitic stainless steel and about 2700 kg/m³ for aluminium.
